Viruses and their variants are increasing by a factor of 10 new viruses a day. Spyware, adware and viruses are all tools directed by commercial and even criminal organisations to generate increasingly sophisticated, targeted attacks. Add to this the activities of a workforce that wants to take full advantage of modern technology and IT security management can be stretched to breaking point.

The narrowing window between the time when a patch is released and a virus or worm exploiting the vulnerability has come down dramatically over the last years. But this is only the beginning. It is also possible that there will be viruses and worms that utilize vulnerabilities in software and operating systems that havent been made public and for which there is no patch yet available.

Thomas Raschke is a Program Manager in the European Software Group IDC and a major contributor to IDC's IT security research program. In his role as he is responsible for IDC's regional security product research providing market sizing, forecasting, and analysis of business opportunities in IT security. In this article he outlines the challenges for IT security and its clear and present threats.

As 2005 progresses, F-Secure will be releasing some its most significant products in the corporate, small and medium business, and consumer segments.

Earlier this 2005 there were rumours circulating that Bluetooth viruses could infect the on-board computers of some Lexus cars, or at least cause them some level of disruption. Although the anti virus research team stopped this rumour in February with an official statement from Toyota explaining that the company does not use Symbian OS, the curiosity of the laboratory team was raised, and with a little help from Toyota, the team decided to go deeper into the rumour 42 metres to be precise.

Mobile viruses are increasingly in the news and F-Secure is ready to battle the challenge. This month F-Secure releases the long-awaited Series 80 version of F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus thus extending mobile anti virus protection to both Nokia 9500 and 9300 Communicator-users.

Bruce Schneier, one of the worlds foremost security experts was present at F-Secures headquarters in Helsinki, Finland at the end of May to deliver a thought-provoking speech about security in todays connected world.

Mayor of San José, Ron Gonzales paid a flying visit to Finlands cradle of high tech, the Otaniemi Science and Technology Park, Espoo this April looking to forge strengthened partnerships between the two cities. F-Secures CEO Risto Siilasmaa was on the spot to reiterate the companys commitment to Silicon Valley pointing out that F-Secure has already been in business there for a decade.
