This issue focuses on Internet Data Security 2/2003

Securing the Information Society

In this version of Protected we will focus extensively on the Internet security needs of end users and small businesses. With the rapid evolution of the Internet amongst non-technical users and the pace at which new technologies are adopted for everyday use, the necessity for easy to use and always-on security is becoming more important than in the past.

Today there are in excess of 600 million Internet users across the world who adopt new services, such as e-mail and internet banking, and access methods at a faster pace to be able to improve personal productivity and to conduct everyday tasks independent of location and time. Home computing, especially among the younger generations, is a very popular way to spend leisure time. Youngsters communicate through several chat channels and build connections in a virtual world that has no borders.

While the Internet has seen record growth in the number of users, 600 times more users since 1988 and 12 times more since 1995, security threats continue to be a major concern amongst both ordinary and professional users. “Always on” Internet access is expanding rapidly through more economic means for acquiring broadband connectivity. In a vast number of European countries, broadband use is forecasted to grow more than 3 times between 2001 and 2005, thus enabling a significantly larger number of both home users and small businesses to access Internet services 24 hours a day – 7 days a week.

Every day there are approximately 10 new viruses found and every two hundredth e-mail is estimated to be infected with a virus. In addition to the increasing number of viruses, hacking attempts to “eavesdrop” on individual users have also become more common. Today F-Secure is investing in technologies and services to offer easy to use “always on” antivirus and personal firewall solutions with automated and transparent update mechanisms to enable secure Internet use

We hope you enjoy this issue about the security solutions we supply together with Internet Service Providers and in close co-operation with hundreds of valued channel partners.

Upcoming release - F-Secure Internet Gatekeeper!

The vast majority of new destructive viruses and other malicious code spread via e-mail or web browsing. Without effective protection at the gateway level in corporate networks, viruses can easily get in and infect servers and end user machines, stealing confidential files, forwarding e-mails, corrupting data or causing large amounts of traffic. F-Secure introduces a new fast-performing firewall and mail system, the independent gateway level solution F-Secure Internet Gatekeeper.
